Tuesday 15th December

Today we had a talk about CV's. At first i thought it was going to be pointless however it really wasn't. I learnt a lot in that one session and now should amend my CV, change is needed. Today I also used my spare time to complete my shirt...this was a big weight off my mind although i am not happy with the hem and want to redo it.

Wednesday 16th December

Private study day which i spent doing things to my pattern cutting book so that i meet my deadline.

Thursday 17th December

I HAVE FINISHEDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!! yay! i met the deadline early and have finished everything. i re did my hem because i wasn't fully happy with it and i completed everything in my patter cutting book, such a huge weight off my mind! Crimbooo here we comeeee!!! :D:D:D

Wednesday 9th December

Today was our Illustrator deadline! It was such a good feeling to hand in my work and take some weight of my mind!

Thursday 10th/Friday 11th December

We cut out and started making the shirt within this time! This didn't go very well for me as from the start when i sewed up the darts wrong which made me do most of it wrong and i had to go back so far that i fell behind by a lot! I now have to catch up and finish my shirt when i can

Monday 14th December

Had my briefing today. our new project is about manifesto! At first i didn't understand but after our group tutorials it was much clearer. I still don't know what theme i am going to choose but from experience i have started doing a project and felt i could have done better if at the beginning i just explored more possibilities, so knowing this that is what i am going to do and hopefully i will create a project i will enjoy making and love the outcome of! Very excited to start a project we construct a garment with.

Thursday 26th November

Today we did pattern cutting with collars, this was good practice as it is something we are going to need o know about in the future if designing garments. however, because it was our last demonstration jody was asking us questions as we went and we struggled to remember the answers, this makes me nervous for our shirt project next week!

Friday 27th November

Today was a private study day and i spent my day doing more work towards my culture project! It was a well needed day!

Monday 30th November

Today we presented our projects to the class. This didn't go very well and although i had finished my project most people hadn't. Karen wasn't very happy with our presentations or marking although i think we did fine considering we have never done it, or been told how to do either of the things before! I will improve my next project!

Wednesday 2nd December

Today we continued in our illustrator lesson to design our logo and garments to go with it! this was beneficial and gave me a chance to learn new things on illustrator. like how to make swatches.

Thursday 3rd December

Today we had pattern cutting and we had a little test. This was to create a shirt pattern by ourselves without and demonstrations! It wasn't as hard as i first thought it was going to be however, there were parts of it that confused me. I think the pattern is correct though and i am happy with the outcome of the day, i feel more confident to create the pattern for my own design now.

Friday 4th December

Today in construction we finished off our shorts, this was more complex than i first thought but i managed to keep up and complete it before the end of the day. We also learnt how to do a curved seam, this wasn't as hard as i thought and i managed to do it just before the end of the day so i don't have to struggle to do any work on the machines on my own.

Monday 7th December

Today we went to London. This was for inspiration for our project. I saw some amazing things in the exhibition we went to first and i later went to a photography exhibition and then to the V&A to see the Fashion part. The best part of the day for me was to watch the live photo shoot. This was amazing as i have an interest in photography anyway and am interested to do something including this interest later in life! Although we missed Jedward as they were running late! A very good day overall!

Tuesday 8th December

Today we have our debate! I am all ready with my facts ready to fight for Eco-Fashion! i feel it is going to be good! The facts that i found when researching for out debate were shocking, such as 250 million children between the ages of 5-14 years are involved in child labour! Facts like this make me consider my role as a consumer in the fashion world!

Thursday 19th November

Today we finished the skirt and started making some shorts. I learnt today that i start to fall behind with my work when it gets about half way through the day and i get tired, so now i know this i shall try and work out how to keep myself motivated for the whole day!

Friday 20th November

Today was a catchup day! It was good as i only had to catch up on some pattern cutting and re-do a little bit on my shorts to make them better and that was it. I really find the catch up days beneficial though because this course is so full on and fast paced it is really useful to get the lecturers help without getting more work to do onto of it!

Monday 23rd November

Today we had a flat drawing exercise, it made me realise i need to practice this exercise to make sure i can do it to a high standard, we also carried on with our projects.

Tuesday 24th November

Today is another catch up day! hoping to get a lot of work done have a lot of work from Sarah and need to practice more on illustrator.

Friday 13th November

Today we did construction....we started the skirt which was hard, i fell behind a bit but i managed to catch up eventually, i also caught up to where we have to be by next session so all is good :) learnt how to put in a invisible zip..that was hard!

Monday 16th November

Today we had a session that the seconds years never got to do and they wanted to do it after seeing our work :) it was fashion drawing and illustrations.....we all got into it and were having fun creating figures and adding clothes. I really noticed an improvement in my drawing by the end of the session which is amazzzzinnggg!! really happy :) Doesn't time fly when you are having fun!

Tuesday 17th November

Today we had Jamie teach us how to use PowerPoint, we made a short presentation on a designer of our choice, i choose Alexander McQueen because of his amazing head pieces and outrages creative designs. there is one picture in particular that i LOVE :
Also my presentation couldn't be uploaded onto google
docs or on here so it will be added when it is fixed! :)

Thursday 12th November

WOW....that was a long hard day again packed with things to learn! today's pattern cutting session gave me ideas of features i could use in future for example the gathered sleeve, as i thought it was very eye-catching and could really enhance a basic outfit! another good lesson but a lot to do in our own time. eeeekk!!

Wednesday, 11 November 2009

Monday 9th November

Today we started our culture project.......researching cultures, i found this very interesting and eye opening because because although i am very aware there are many cultures that make up this world i have never taken the time to fully understand and appreciate them all individually. I really think this project will benefit me as someone entering the Fashion Industry. Cant wait to continue it.

Tuesday 10th November

Today we had I.T with Jamie drawing a trainer on Illustrator....this was challenging, i re-drew mine several times to realise i had done it wrong even on the last time! but i learnt how to fix the problem:) the drop in session with Sarah was very interesting and she gave us a lot of work to be getting on with that will make us think about the course we are on! we also get to have a debate soon! cant wait!

Wednesday 11th November

Illustrator with Steve, again we learnt more skills in Illustrator which will benefit me in the future! continued creating out logo and brand name etc.

Sunday, 8 November 2009

Wednesday 4th November

Illustrator lessons- this was such a productive day! we started designing fashion Logos and i learnt some really cool new techniques, cant wait to finish mine....feels like illustrator is going to come in handy :)

Thursday 5th November

Construction... today we had to finish our bodice and also learn some hems! The bodices were soooo hard....the amount of times i had to unpick and redo things was unreal! but practise makes perfect ive been told :)

Friday 6th November

Construction/catch up day- yet again i spent all my time re-doing things on my bodice and after i finally finished that i re-did some more seams! arrrgh it was hard to stay calm with it, but i have now noticed one thing...thanks to the teachers i have now gained a need for everything to be perfection. I have been going through my work noticing my own mistakes and even re-doing things that i thought were not good enough that the teachers thought were....what are you doing to me! This is going to be good in the future though and this also reinforces the comment i have made before about the need for perfection on completing this course :)

Tuesday, 3 November 2009

Monday 2nd November:

Today we went on a fabric trip to London!!! FUN! As soon as we walked into the shops we realised why we went to London.....i have never seen so many fabrics in such a little space! collecting samples was hard because the shop owners werent very willing but we managed to get some! the rest of the day was good shopppppppiing :) yay i think we got lost in Primark about 5 times in and hour and wow.....we all survived the coach ride home.....just! all in all a brilliant day :)

Tuesday 3rd November:

Back to campus for a fun filled lesson of I.T....flat drawings in illustrator wow that is hard :) im getting there with it though....soon there will be no stopping me! heres hoping anyway :)

Sunday, 1 November 2009

Sunday 1st November:

Today i am spending the whole day doing my Uni work.....i dont know where to start! i missed Uni on Friday and it feels like i am so far behind! and here is the start of a very long day!!!
Wednesday 28th October:

Illustrator lessons with Steve again today learnt more techniques that will be useful in the future, i enjoy these lessons even though i do find it hard to figure it all out!

Thursday 29th October:

Pattern cutting lessons are getting faster by the session, had such a fast paced lesson today and learnt so much more which will benefit me in the future...ohhh exciting...so much going on! It is great that we have only been at Uni for just over a month and already we know so much :)

Illustrator Lessons with Jamie.......how much help can one person get in a lesson? :)

My Fifth Week at University

Monday 26th October

Today we continued with our black and white sculpture projects, this was good again as we could work at our own pace to our set deadline. I was pleased with the outcome of the project overall however i do feel i could have made a better product if i had researched before i made, having more inspiration. Also i have a lot more to do in my sketch book to make it look full and complete before the final hand in date, i am enjoying doing the sketch book though so it should be fun! :)
Wednesday 21st October

We had illustrator lessons again today, learnt a lot of new things which was really good....learnt how to make writing follow a path and fill a shape! My fave part of the lesson though was my chat with Steve about the fact i am not allowed to say 'I CAN'T DO IT' in lesson and he told me a story about a dead bee and Avon housewives ha.....taught me belief is an extremely powerful tool though.....i will beat you I.T! :)

Thursday 22nd October

I was pleased that we were making the bodice we had made a pattern for the week before as i was excited to make something which i could actually see coming together as a garment. This was a very fast paced lesson though and we had to work fast to keep up....i managed to do it and each step i was so pleased with myself for doing it right, maybe with a little help...thanks Penny :) I will finish this next week!

Audio Handout

I found this audio handout very interesting and helpful, it gave me a good insight into the world of Fashion and made me think of a few things about my own career. 7 things that were particularly brought to my attention were:

1) The incorporation of celebrities in the world of Fashion is HUGE!

2) There are 100's of jobs within the Fashion industry and jobs within jobs such as hats-colours-fabrics and decoration

3) NOBODY giving advice on the audio tape actually ended up where they wanted to be but they are all very happy with what they are doing now! Don't write of major parts of the Fashion industry until you have tried them.

4) The well known names of the Fashion industry we know of and hear are just the tip of the iceberg.....there are so many more out there.

5) Be realistic and prepared to work, organised and competitive!

6) Smaller jobs are available within the industry such as design assistant, pattern cutter and Fashion stylist.

7) Work experience is vital- companies will choose people who they know can do the job and have seen before over someone they have never seen work no matter how qualified wither of them are.

I also learnt from this audio tape one very wise and true fact............Skill increases with age while designs come and go!

PPRD Questions

I actually enjoyed completing the first set of questions as it was good to see what I already know I want to do and what areas I need to improve on. The second half was even better! It was strange to see what issues I valued in life and surprising to know I do not or do value items more or less than I originally thought. It was quite hard to think of items I value after about number 5 so I asked others and they knew straight away and thinking of it now, are spot on! This was a very interesting exercise and I think it will help me to see what I as a student and person need to improve on. I can't wait to compare this to another one in a few months time to see how it has changed!

PPRD PowerPoint Questions

(Personal Planning, Reflection and Development) This part of the session was taken by Sarah and a PowerPoint presentation was shown to us including courses requirements and regulation. We then had another presentation to allow us to reflect on our work. The questions that were included are answered below:

How is teaching different from learning? Well teaching, you already know the information and you are sharing your knowledge with people who do not know, and learning is widening your knowledge on a subject or learning how to do certain things.

How do they fit together- why does one rely on the other? Teaching and learning fit together because to teach you have to learn and to learn you have to be taught!

Why do you want to learn? I personally want to learn to widen my knowledge and enhance my education of Fashion so that I have a stronger chance of getting a job within the fashion industry. I do not just want a job, I want a career, which I can enjoy and perform at my highest potential with. I also like to learn in the hope I can help others in the future. Also, I am going to make the most of life and grab every opportunity that comes my way, thinking of the consequences’ later…in this case about £20,000 worth of debt!

How can you make the best of your University learning experience? As mentioned above I can and will grab every opportunity that comes my way to ensure I get the most out of my University experience. Also I should learn not to panic and enjoy the work as much as I enjoy the company of everyone around me! I will try and keep up with the work load given to us to prevent mistakes or rushing and I will complete everything I do to the best of my ability, not being scared to ask questions and watch EVERYTHING to learn! OH also, I shall sit next to Tiffany in every I.T based session so I can actually learn how to conquer this damn I.T!!!! J

Teaching= Inspiration, acquire the facts, inform research, feedback, assess your performance.
Learning= Self motivation, thinking for yourself, apply knowledge, read around topic, use internet, discuss with peers/tutors, ask questions make links.

We then we asked to list the 5 most successful people we know or know of….I found this hard and made me realize who is successful as I have never stopped to think about this before.

***Rank in order of importance***
What did they do?
What did they overcome?
What skills did they learn/have?
What qualities did they learn/have?
What effect did/do they have on people?

1) David Sparkes- This is somebody who is like a brother to me, he is 23 years old and he helps run a summer school for local schools in Plymouth. David Sparkes has overcome leukemia twice within his life and now lives his life to the full with a successful life. He has the skills to work with young people and aspire and motivate them to do well and have fun, he is such a lovely person and he affects people in such a good way to live their life to the full and just always have fun and most importantly…do everything you want to do in life!
2) My sister Lisa- Lisa is now a research assistant for dementia within St Ann’s. She worked really hard through a three year degree at Cardiff University in psychology and learnt all the technicalities of this degree. Lisa has the qualities and skills to complete her job to a high standard and she works to help people and enhance their quality of life.
3) My Brother Adam-
4)
5)

My Finished I.T Mood Board

Finally got the chance to finish my mood board!!
Tuesday 20.10.09

I am sat in I.T at the moment updating my blog and finishing off bits and bobs that I have not done so far! This is a good opportunity for me as I feel I am slightly falling behind, not with anything major but with little bits, and that is what annoys me the most. I have more work to do which I will upload on here later!

My Fourth Week of University

Monday 19.10.09

Today we started the black and white sculpture project. Our brief was to make a piece of clothing or a feature of clothing out of black and white fabric of paper. Me and Esme worked together to create our project and we decided to create a feature/top. At first I had a mind blank and could not think of how to start the project but Esme helped and once we got started we couldn’t stop. We have nearly finished the top, just a few more touches to make, in next Mondays lesson I will be researching and reporting the project in my sketch book as well as finishing the product. I am very pleased with what we have done so far!

My Third Week of University

Monday 12.10.09

Today we made mood boards, I chose to do mine on Military and this is because I have never studied it before or really thought of the concept of it within the Fashion industry. We were given the day to complete the boards which was good as it allowed me to work at my own time and complete the board to a high standard. I am happy with the outcome.

Tuesday 13.10.09

Today in I.T we made theme boards using Photoshop, learning the basics, I decided to complete mine on Military again so that I could clearly compare them. I am finding Photoshop hard to come to terms with though and still have a lot to do on my board.

Wednesday 14.10.09

The first day of the illustrator lessons, and as I have mentioned before I do not get on with I.T very well so I was a bit anxious about this lesson, however it was all clearly explained to us and I found it ok, although I got frustrated with myself a few times. Overall, a fun lesson (Sponge Bob J)

Thursday 15.10.09

We had our second session of pattern cutting today. This time we made the patterns from modelling on the mannequin first and then making the paper pattern from the outcome. I found this technique tricky and didn’t find it as beneficial to me as the first method of pattern cutting! However I do think I benefited from the lesson overall as it is useful for me to understand all methods of pattern cutting, I feel my knowledge is growing.

Sunday 18.10.09

The day of all days! Today I completed the volunteer work at the Cumberland Hotel Bournemouth. Me and Esme got put in charge of the door, selling and giving out tickets...this was manic and didn’t go quite as planned but we got through it with a smile. Being a dresser was incredible. As me and Esme were on the door at the start of the night we weren’t really assigned a shop, so when it came to the show we were just floating dressers making ourselves aware to anybody that may have needed help and dressing any models that needed to be. By the end of the night I was so tired and warn out but so happy that I was given the opportunity to be a dresser for a Fashion show and glad I now have some experience! A huge thank you to Jenelle!

Reading before starting the Fda Fashion Course

The most useful book I have read, gives a good insight into the educational world of Fashion!

My Second Week at University

Monday 05.10.09
Today we looked through everyone's holiday projects, this was useful as it taught me a lot more about people in my group, we also got our first assignment today, to make a theme board this is going to be fun!

Tuesday 06.10.09
We had our IT induction today with Jamie; I lack computer skills so it will be interesting to see what I actually manage to do! We set up our blogs today!

Wednesday 07.10.09
It was a private study day today so I took a trip to The Range and Fabric Land to collect all the necessities for my assignment and classes.

Thursday 08.10.09
Today was a very long day, I feel like I learnt a lot though, we practised seams and I found it interesting and was excited to start practical.

Friday 09.10.09
Today we started pattern cutting, I thought it was going to be really hard and I was going to get lost because I have only ever used a brought pattern and adapted it before, but it wasn't. Jody and Alena explained every single step and ensured we completed each task correctly. From the very start it is clear the lecturers want us to perform to the best of our ability this is going to help us create some good work! I'm very proud of my pattern and can't wait to make the garment even if it is only to practice :) I now feel really comfortable at AUCB and I know i'm going to have an amazing 2 (hopefully 3) years here accompanied by wonderful friends and kind, approachable teachers! My dream is finally turning into reality!

My First Week at University

Monday 28.09.09
It is the end of my first day at AUCB and i'm really tired but excited because I have met loads of very nice people today. We didn't do any work so it doesn't really feel like Uni yet.

Tuesday 29.09.09
I enrolled today! I now feel like I belong to the Arts University College Bournemouth.

Wednesday 30.09.09
A good day today, we did a treasure hunt which was very funny, people got very competitive, I wonder if that is going to be the same case with their work. Also had more talks and inductions.

Thursday 01.10.09
We went to Studland today, walked for ages along the beach in the sun, stopped in two cafes and a pub...all together a fab day! It gave us the chance to bond with everyone else on our course and also talk to 2nd years about the year. I'm now very excited to start my journey at AUCB!
Bring On The Fashion!!!!!
