Christmas work

over the Christmas period i decided to look back on my photography Passion and search for information and imaged on all the photographers i have studied or learnt about that interest me! I did this so that now, at the start of my project I can look at more photographers and base my work on a certain style or photographer to give my project more direction. It also means i can use my passion for Photography.

I also started brainstorming and coming up with ideas for my project as well as talking to people about the project to ignite new ideas.

I also contacted companies for existing look books for my initial research.

  • Topshop
  • Dorothy Perkins
  • Republic
  • Portobello
  • Miss Selfridges
  • Asos

Look Books

I have decided that over the Christmas period I am going to try and source existing Look Books from companies so that I can look through them and fully understand what a Look Book is, as well as having examples of different ideas that I could use to make my book more unique.

pp brief

Today we were briefed on our pp. the outcome is that we have to produce a look book around the word revolutionary and it must push the boundaries and be unique to our future aspirations.

my first thoughts on this project were positive, the idea of working around the word revolution at first meant nothing to me as i don't actually know the full meaning of the word.

At this stage of the project i feel confident, calm and collective about the project itself and feel happy with the brief given....cant wait to get underway with this project! I plan to make it a higher quality to any work i have completed before and really tailor it to what i wish to do when i leave university so that i can take it to interview.

Self Development throughout the Trend Book project

Self development throughout the Trend Book project

Following a session that took place on Wednesday 17th November, where Sarah and Jamie looked at our trend books, I came away feeling that my work was not at the standard that I originally thought. Following this I came away with both suggestions made by the lecturers and thoughts of my own and worked through the book adding elements to enhance the overall quality. After this I felt that the book fits together better and is actually more athletically appealing. Suggestions were things like making the book more balanced....because I have a specific layout that uses a lot of white space, I had many other pages that were examples of symmetry and totally balanced, the mix of the two did not work. Also it was also suggested that the panels I have used to complete my colour palettes should be used in other places in my book to link it all together and make the book flow.

Following a succession we had with Sarah looking at magazine spreads and interviewing each other on our trend books it became apparent to me that I need to make my book more unique to me and more creative; finding the balance of showing technical computer skills and being creative is hard! However it was picked up on that I used words such as; random selection, pretty, comfort and history, which are all words that I would use to sum up my book and also could use within my book to make it more personal to me.

During a photography workshop organised by Sarah I made a big realisation. My love of photography was reignited and my ability to read images and analyse elements of photography was reinstated. This got my imaginative juices flowing and sparked thoughts for my major project after Christmas. I am definitely going to study photography and have some great ideas of directions I can take it to tailor it to my aspirations.

Trend Book hand in:

Today I handed in my trend book project early, as i had finished all the work and wanted to get it out of the way so that i could relax and start thinking about my next project.

What a relief it was to hand in the project, impressed with myself for the outcome of the work. Not only have i produced a final trend book that i am very pleased with, i have made a break through with the project itself as during this term i have up-ed the level of my personal work and decided it was time to make my work a standard i could be proud to take to industry. I have now found a way in which i like to work which is a higher standard to my school days of a sketch book!

I hope i have done enough to show how much hard work i have really put into this project and i hope i give myself a good working platform to base my next project around!

Involvement of people

Profiles of people involved in my photo shoot!

Danni Callahan

Danni studied Photography at 6th form. She has been taking photos ever since she bought herself a camera years and years ago and thought it would be a great choice of A level to take. She has had a few amazing experiences with it, for example going to the British Gas Swimming Championships to take photos of Olympic swimmers.
Taking the photos for the fashion shoot gave her a different perspective of photography like the lighting and angles.

‘I thought the day went well and some of the images I took came out very nicely. I enjoyed being involved in the shoot and hope to work with Samantha again in the near future.’

Zoe Mitchener

Zoe is 19, studying Foundation degree in Musical theatre at Bournemouth University. She has been performing since the age of 4. Has interests in dance, music, fashion and she helped out with purchasing the clothes, locating the model and poses/ ideas on the day of the shoot. She was a great help!

‘I enjoyed the day; it was a good productive and relaxed atmosphere. We managed to achieve some excellent photo's that were true to the themes and showcased the clothes with a professional outcome.’

Kirsty Hallett

Age: 19

Kirsty is a trained performer, dancer and technician. She trained dancing with R.A.D from the age of 5 and have lived most of my life on the stage. At 14 she gained an interest in all areas of theatre especially backstage. Kirsty completed 2 weeks work experience then started doing voluntary work at the local theatre. After going to Poole College to study performing arts she also took on an extra course to study all the technical aspects of theatre. After all her voluntary work she was employed by the company and now works as a stage technician at Bournemouth pavilion/ BIC. Kirsty has only recently started modelling and she has really enjoyed it, she feel that it is an extension of my performing and is fun to do!

‘The shoot with Samantha was very enjoyable. She did a great job with styling and directing the shoot. I had so much fun and laughed a lot!’

Photo Editing

These images are some of the pictures that were a result of my photo shoot. I have edited some in different ways to make them more original and appealing. I edited them using Photoshop and I will use some of these images in my final Trend Book.

Editing Images

This image is one of my fave images from all my photo shoots. the original idea of having the background of the image to be black and white and the eyes in colour didnt really work very well as the original colour of the eyes were brown so didnt stand out. I then searched google images for a picture of an eye which was more appealing and then using layers in Photoshop I replaced the original eyes with my chosen blue eyes, which now stand out beautifully! This image is going to be used on my front cover!

Modip project hand in:

Today was the MoDip hand in! After weeks and weeks of working together as a team it was finally time to put all our work together and present. It was a bit of a rush to add finishing touches to the project and to print out the boards we had to print out because the printers weren't allowing us to print for days before.

The presentation itself wasn't bad at all and was only in front of two other teams as people in my group were uncomfortable of doing it in front of the whole class. The ideas were put across clearly and we showed we worked hard as a team and thought about everything possible!

Although.....I am glad its over!!!!

Student protest against fees

this is an image taken at Uni where students were gathering ready to go on protest against the rise in tuition fees. I fully support this!!!! The rise in fees is going to be ridiculous and will determine the future of many students hoping to study at university.

Photography workshop

today we had a workshop on Photography which was really inspirational to me. We were shown how the editing of images could really change them for good and seeing some of the before and after shots of celebs were shocking.
We also received a list of good fashion photographers that we could look at, this would be useful for my next project.
this workshop ignited my Passion for photography once again and gave me images to use in my next project, i am now sure i am going to use photography as a big part of my pp!

Trend Book

okkkk....so I finallllyy finished all my research! I have decided that enough is enough and I am getting caught up too much on research and with the deadline coming fast it is time to really crack on with the creation of the trend book! It is sooooo hard though! I am still so unsure of what exactly I am going to do on each page of my book, but I am just hoping that once I have got everything together for one style, the others will just fall into place. Soooo fingers crossed and here we goooo....

My 1950's Research

COLOUR!

HOUSEWIVES OF 1950TODAYS HOUSEWIVES!

PPRD

So...in PPRD this year we have to work on a project in a team (a mix of designers and promoters). We all got given an item from the past and have to work together to promote this and learn more about it!

So my team got a butter/cheese dish!

Having chosen as a team to go down the 1950's housewife route...now all we have to do is figure out how to do all the work for it! Hmmm.....

My Muse!

For my trend book we were advised to pick a muse which our target market would aspire to! Sienna Miller fits all my categories within my trend book! She dresses for comfort in boyfriend fit clothing, she has a very Bo-Ho look andddd shes veryyyy Eco and like to promote this! Perfect :)

A focus for my trend book!

One of my styles for the trend book is going to be Boyfriend fit clothing....and this garment is HUGE!

Design Packages!

I can feel the development of the design packages coming along!

Within my lessons with Jamie, I have learnt sooo much more about InDesign! Learning little elements at a time and shortcuts make it very easy to remember and each thing becomes so handy while actually using the package!

Kaledo...I had a quick lesson on this with Caroline and it was sooo good to see what I can do with it, It seems like it is going to be an easier way of drawing on the computer and I cant wait to learn more on this design package.

Photoshop.....I learnt how to cut around images!!! Finally, this is something I have always wondered...a simple feature that can leave more work looking more effective and professional, I finally pinned Jamie down to show me.....definitely going to be using this feature a lot!

So......Everything got a little more interesting!

Well, well, well, here I am again....blogging! After a veryyy long and relaxing Summer! It's been a long time but back to Uni I go! I have been back for a couple of week now....and ohhh my! what a hectic two weeks they have been!

So we got our brief, which at the initial look was exciting and at a real level which would increase the overall standard of my work! However, after starting the project...although it has not lost these elements, it become apparent to how much work we have to do to get to the final product!

I'm not going to lie....I panicked! A LOT! about working to the veryyy tight deadline and getting my head around the research. I decided that it's time to up the level of my work as the work I produced last year represented my work from education before University. So it's time to work work work!

Things I have learnt about myself so far:

I am indecisive....very much so, its time to change. I have to organise everything and decide everything for myself!

I panic wayyyy to much! I think I worry about everything....i mean.....EVERY.LITTLE.DETAIL! because.....

I over think things!

Right this unit is going to be my chance to change!!!!

PPRD Feedback!

04.05.10

Today we had PPRD feedback! I didn't really know what to expect about this as I didn’t know if it was going to be marked like everything else we have had to hand in for deadlines! I was happy that I passed and with 59% which was really good :) I understand the comment that Jamie and Sarah made on my feedback sheet about having to go into more depth about what I am getting out of my uni experience etc. The fact that Sarah noted down suggestions from us about how to improve the use of the blogs for next year was a good idea and gave us a chance to share our opinion on this! Very Very pleaseddddddddddd and will continue to try to keep up with this next year!

29.04.10

Today I had my very first critique!!!! Oh my it was scary! I didnt know what to expect, however, it turned out ok! They actually liked it :D I felt that i did ok in the presentaion and it went ok! I tried really hard with my styling, and although i wasnt spot on, they still noticed that i had tried which i was really happy with! It is now such a load of my mind....soooo happy! Altogether this has been a successful project...not only has it taught me a lot about Fashion and the indusrty it has also taught me a lot about myself and my skills within the subject and coping under pressure! I have learnt to manage my time a little better and making that little bit more effort really does pay off! Although it has been fun, challenging and cery rewarding....I am definatly a promotion girl!!!! BRING ON SECOND YEARRRR!!!! wooooooooooo :D:D:D

With my future in mind....

http://www.monsoon.co.uk/

Over the Easter holidays I was determined to find a job working in Fashion retail! I have had a job for nearly 3 years at Staples...and although this was good at teaching me how to communicate with customers etc, it does not fill the required experience I need to succeed in my future career!

After a lot of hard work working on my CV and cover letters, I am very happy, excited, over the moon to say I now work for Monsoon! wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!! :D Beautiful clothes!

10.03.10

Buying and Merchandising...It is getting closer to the deadline! still learning a lot about the subject that i would have never have thought about before! It gives a real insight into the industry and other careers available to us!

12.03.10

Another practical day...again the deadline is getting a lot closer and i am starting to worry about getting my outfit completed on time. Still getting all the help i need from the lecturers so i am sure i will get it done! fingers crossed!

15&16.03.10- Private study- Working on toile!

17.03.10

Our veryyyyyy last Buying and Merchandising session! I had completed my assignment by this time because i had been working on it a lot throughout the term and i felt i needed to hand it in before i started doubting what i was writing and the toile review was creeping up and i just felt i had too much on top of me! Handed it in today....what a weight of my shoulders! now just to focus on the toile!

18.03.10

Worsttttttttttttt day yet! Oh my days! everything was going wrong! everything i touched fell apart and every bit of work i did on my toile had to be done again! I got a lot of practise for redoing things but this day was a real struggle!

22.03.10

My toile reveiew. I was one of the first to show my outfit and i was scared of the feedback! It went ok though and they were happy with what i had done as well as me liking my outfit. We spoke about it and they shared some very good suggestions and i noted everyone and will defiantly consider using them within my final garment!

Easter Holidaysssssssssssssssssss :D:D:D:D

08.03.10

Construction continues on Monday morning. I decided to concentrate on making the bottoms to my outfit to see if i could actually get somewhere with it. I put together the basic shape and then put it on the stand...this made me realise i needed to lower the crotch to give more room for movement! To save me having to start all over again i just traced the existing line and made an extended piece about 10cm long, I will just then patch this is and see if it has made it better!

09.03.10

continue with the trousers, and start the top....time is running out!!! arrrrgh!!

The Construction Begins......

04.03.10

Today we started our construction lessons with Jane! I went in with all my work but didnt have a clue how or where to start on making my garments! I spent the whole day making the patterns. It was a simple pattern but there was a lot to change and it really confused me! i didnt finish a complete pattern but i did start patterns for all 3 garments! This is something that i find hard anyway but it is rewarding to be making something that i have designed myself! I just cant wait untill i can actually see it coming together! I plan to do some more work on this over the weekend and also i need to work on buying and merchandising! eeeek! Successful day :)

Tuesday, 2 March 2010

25.02.10

Today we had our last session of Lectra.....this has gone well fast! We just learnt a bit more about the and got the chance to do some work on our folder. I actually got to finish this and i decided to hand in my work early! This was good and such a weight off my mind!

02.03.10

Today is another PPRD session, this gives me the chance to catch up on things i may have fallen behind in! yet another useful session! I also think it will be beneficial if i make a plan of action of what i am going to do with my design project so i keep up and it doesn't get too crazy when we start making! I really need to do lots more work on this! yiikeess!

Tuesday, 23 February 2010

Monday 22nd Feb

Today I presented my work to Karen and Pat. I was the first student to do it at 9.30. Being on my own was a benefit because I had all of their attention and help! It went well. we all agreed on a design and spoke about what i had to do next. This was a very good session and helped me become clear about my work. Now I just have to worrrkkk workkk workkkk!

Tuesday 23rd Feb

I passedddddddd my ABC Illustratorrrrrr woooop! very happy about that! Another day to catch up on Blogs and work that needs to be done! Very good days.....some well needed time! For the next couple of days i am really going to concentrate on my Lectra work for our deadline!

Thursday, 18 February 2010

Wednesday 27th January

Another lecture on buying and merchandising....learnt a lot again but found it hard to sit still for 3 hours straight.

Thursday 28th January

Today we had our second Lectra lesson. We took the pattern that we digitised the week before and we developed it to be the pattern we required to make the t-shirt in the jersey work shop. We changed the lentgh, the sleeve and doubled each pattern piece up to make a full pattern. This was very interesting to see how much easier pattern cutting can be using technology

Monday 1st Feb

Today we had our manifesto project lesson. This was very benificial as it showed me what i still needed to go in my project and how to develop my project further.

Tuesday 2nd Feb

Today we got our Pattern cutting and Construction marks back! i got 62% this made me soooo happy!!!! cant believe i passed! and with a good mark! woooo hoooooo! love this :D

Wednesday 3rd Feb

Another buying and merchandising lecture, we looked at planning and the stages buyers have to go through within the fashion indusrty. this was very eye opening to what jobs are available to me when i leave Uni.

Thursday 4th Fab

We developed our pattern further today in Lectra. completed it so it is ready to be printed out. we also practised using Lectra by doing different things like marry and divorse pattern pieces. This showed me what i could do in this programme and was very interesting.

Monday 8th Feb

Today we had our manifesto lesson. I brought all my work and showed the lecturers and explained my ideas. i felt this went well and they told me which parts of my project i needed to develop further...getting closer to picking the design!!! arrghhh

Tuesday 9th Feb

Today we did working drawings with Jamie for our Lectra t-shirt. we also had another chance to do more to our manifesto project with the lecturers help! this was another useful day!

Wednesday 10th Feb

Another b&m lecture today. we looked at seasons and this made me reaslise there are alot more than the normal spring, summer, winter etc. there are also seasons such as christmas and valentines day which really affect the fashion indusrty. We also got given maths homework.....i do not stand a chance!!!

Thursday 11th Feb

Jersey work shop with Jane! this gave me the insight into using stretch fabrics. we did samples on the over locker changing the tension until it was right and we also used the finishing machines, the cover stitch and the twin needle! we also made t-shirt samples and practised what we would be doing with the ribs when we made the t-shirt!

Friday 12th Feb

Today i printed out my pattern and becaus ei was a little bit ahead i started making the t-shirt. i completed this in the session. This was such a weight off my mind and felt really goo that i did this all in such a short time allll to a standard i am happy with :D wooooo!

Monday 15th Feb

Today in our manifesto lesson we had a presentation about illustration! we also a talk with Karen about our projects as next week we will be picking the design! this made me feel better about what i had still left to do and how i could develop my project. we spoke about fabrics because i am still not sure what fabric i want to use!

Tuesday 16th Feb

Today we had our presentations. We did our presentaion on New York and we went first. This went ok but i think everyone in my group got a bit shy and we rushed it and it wasnt very clear. we could have done better. but watching other peoples presentations were good and i learnt different ways to give a presentaion which i can use in the future!

WORK WORK WORK ON MY MANIFESTO PROJECT FOR MONDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tuesday, 26 January 2010

Wednesday 20th:

Today we had our first lecture on buying and merchandizing, this was very god and eye opening and showed us what we will be learning and what we need to know but this was very long! we haven't been used to having lectures and sitting down for 3 hours is hard! but im sure we will all get used to it :)

Thursday 21st:

Today we started our Lectra course. This was good also and is going to make the construction a lot easier for us! i was expecting this to be very hard and complicated but it actually wasn't, although there is a lot to remember! again i guess we will get used to this more as we go along the course.

Friday 22nd:

Private study- spent all day doing work for our manifesto project.

Monday 25th:

Today we had another session for our manifesto project and we concentrated on colour palettes! I did not know there was that much to colour palettes! It was very eye opening to the industry and their processes and i think it was a very good thing that Karen brought in her work from previous companies to show us, this was a great help. We also had group tutorials and this helped to get my project in order and to know my next step!

Tuesday 26th:

Today we had split sessions and worked on our projects for the first half, this was handy to have time within the studio to do the work that i needed to do! although i wasn't very prepared and didn't have all my stuff with me so hit a brick wall with my work. now we are just catching up with odd bits that needs to be done! ON WITH THE PROJECT!!!!!!!!

Tuesday, 19 January 2010

Christmas holidays!

During the christmas holidays I started working on out current project 'Manifesto' i did this by starting my research into ethical and sustainable issues. i decided to do this is depth to ensure i understand the situations fully before i start designing. I also was trying to think of a theme to start my designing but it was harder than it seemed! everything i thought of cam to a dead end and ran dry after a while of researching it! so i decided to talk to the lecturers. I also used some time in the holidays to finalize my 2 small projects from the start of the course; black and white project and culture project. there wasn't much i needed to do to these but got them all finished ready for deadline. while doing this though, i did realise i need to become more decisive as i really can not make decisions, becoming more confident in my own judgment would be a great skill for me to acquire.

Monday 11.01.10

It was our first day back after the lovely holiday and it was a chance for me to talk to Karen about the project i had struggled with over the holidays. Sarah James gave a good presentation on sustainable issues which was really good as i only managed to focus on ethical by myself so this stemmed my next step in my research. I then took the opportunity to sit down with Karen and talk about what theme i could do! this really helped :) she started asking me random questions just to see what i am interested in and what i could maybe have to inspire me, and working together and talking about things we slowly started building up an idea of where i could take my research.

we decided as i have a love for photography and studied it for an A level it was a good idea if i incorporated this into my project, to the point where i use images to put together my own theme, i will go out and take random images and capture textures, plants, emotions and life so that i can put the best images together to create a mood of 'everyday living' I can then use this to select colours, textures and shapes to inspire me with my designing. this will also not restrict me in what i can design and i can go wild with my designs :) I am excited to do this and cant wait to see the outcome. i can then build on top of this to include features from my research such as recycling and ethical and sustainable issues.

For the duration of that week:

I used this time to continue my research and preparing to move on with my project. This was time well needed and helped me a lot in the progression of my work. However, it has made me realise i have a lot to do in such a little time!

Monday 18.01.10

This was our deadline for the two projects at the start of our course! I hit the deadline and cant wait to find out the outcome although these two projects have made me very determined to do better in my current project and develop on areas which i felt were weak in these studies. Such as elements of research and designs.

I then went home form this deadline and again, continued with my project! 9 hours, 9 hourssssssssssssss (thats like a long day at work :) ) i sat there and did my work...non-stop! it nearly killed me. After this upon reflecting on this time i started to panic. this is because i feel i got nowhere just because i spent all this time re-doing my work because i wasn't happy with my presentation of my research. i need to really start moving forward with my project and i aim to do a lot more by Mondays lesson! sooooo much to do sooooo little time!

Tuesday 19.01.10

Today we are working on presentations. our deadline has been extended and although me and Tiffany have already completed our section of the presentation its a good opportunity to enhance it and include more info. Also we need to join all our groups work together so we are ready to do our presentation. we are using Google Docs for this. Also watching clips on presentations will enhance our work and show us how to present to an audience and how to deliver a strong performance!!!
